By a 148 to 8 margin, student ResStaff at the University of Michigan voted overwhelmingly to form a labor union.
The ResStaff Allied Organization (RAO) is an independent labor union representing the RAs, DPEs, and RSCs leading U-M’s residential communities.
Time for a fair contract.
Resstaff’s story
In Fall 2020, ResStaff at U-M went on strike over U-M's poor response to COVID-19. In spite of not having a union at the time, ResStaff won basic PPE, testing priority, case transparency, and more with their strike. However, their most important win was demonstrating the power of collective action for future ResStaff.
Through RAO, ResStaff have the ability to improve working, living, and studying conditions not just for themselves, but for all students.

a Collective voice
ResStaff are the leaders of U-M’s residential communities, yet we lack a say in how our communities are governed. ResStaff deserve a seat at the table.
Living stipends
Housing waivers don’t pay bills, ResStaff deserve a fair living stipend.
job security
ResStaff can be unhoused at-will under current policy. ResStaff deserve dignity and security through just-cause protections.
resources and Support
There must be ResStaff-specific resources to support community leaders in our uniquely challenging work environment.
rsc living wage
ResStaff Student Coordinators (RSCs) make what amounts to $6/hr. RSCs deserve the campus minimum wage of $15/hr.
collectivized laundry
Paid laundry disproportionately hurts low-income students. Residents deserve free in-dorm laundry.
